Mechagodzilla (Toho) Godzilla (Super7) (Super7)Giant robots are cool, and so are giant monsters. Combine the two and you get Mechagodzilla, the massive weapon against Godzilla. Debuting in the last two films of the Showa era, the character was popular enough to continue appearing in Godzilla media, including the Heisei-era film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, and it's this version of the mech that gets the Ultimate treatment. The box is quite similar to Godzilla, but taller to house the character. The slip cover has a mechanical texture, which certainly fits, and the dark color scheme of the underlying box is good too. There's a more proper bio on the back for this character, which is an improvement over the wave one packaging. It's easy to get everything out, just remove some tape and twisties. As with the first wave, Four Horsemen handled the sculpting duties, but I can't find who specifically did this figure. Mechagodzilla was designed similarly to the kaiju it fought against, with its head having a few small scales on the back, a fin on top, and sharp teeth. It looks very nice, with all the details being preserved from the film, even some sculpted lines in the eyes. The paint is great as well, being covered in a metallic silver with clean work on the eyes. Mechagoji gets three heads rather than just two: one with a closed mouth, one with an open mouth, and one looking way up. Mechagodzilla may not have a big, space-occupying tail like Godzilla does, but it's a little taller at 9 1/4". The sculpt is very accurate to the movie, with all the proper details present, albeit a little bit of softness. The only different detail from the film are the feet/ankles, but that's so articulation can be implemented, and the joints blend in well with the sculpt. The body is covered in the same silver as the head, with a few black areas. There are some areas of imperfections and bleed, but it's mostly good otherwise. Although it's not quite as articulated as Godzilla, Mechagodzilla still has plenty of useful joints. The head is on a barbell joint, but it doesn't get a whole lot of range due to the design. The arms sport swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, hinged elbows, and swivel forearms. The lack of bicep/elbow swivels can limit things a bit, but you can still do quite a bit with them, just be mindful of tight elbows. The waist is a ball peg with a good amount of tilt and turn, and below it are swivel/hinge hips and ankles, swivel thighs, and hinged knees. You'll be able to do quite a bit with what's included, but man, I wish those elbows weren't so tight. Mechagodzilla gets plenty of accessories to help spice up its look on the shelf. There's three different heads as I mentioned earlier, along with two pairs of hands - clawing and relaxed - and they swap with little issues. The upright head and relaxed hands for meant for a flying pose, hence the inclusion of four jet thrust effects: two for the back, and two for the thighs. They plug in fine, and it makes me wish they included a stand to keep MechaGoji in mid-air. For weaponry, there's two shock anchors that plug into the forearms, and the metal poles ensure they'll hold up, along with a plasma grenade stomach plate that clips onto the abdomen, although it doesn't fit quite perfectly. Lastly, there's the Garuda jet, which looks great, and the scales on MechaGoji's back can be swapped out for it (though the scales pop off too easily as a consequence of this), along with turrets that can flip down over the shoulders. While not without its flaws, Mechagodzila proves to be more enjoyable than the big G, with a great sculpt and paint, along with some fun accessories that let you change up how it looks. I'm looking forward to more from this line, and I hope to get as much characters as possible. - 10/20/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
