Raphael (Mutagen Ooze Glow) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)One thing that can certainly be said about Super7 is that they loving doing glow-in-the-dark figures. How much so? Their first released TMNT Ultimate was one of them, before the regular version even came out. We've since gotten a few others, including the four turtles themselves in "Mutagen Ooze" variants. They looked cool, but the higher $65 price due to the rising cost of glow material, along with it being Super7-exclusive meaning absurd shipping costs kept me away. Just earlier today, I was able to secure one for a good price at the annual Maryland Toy Expo, and it's my favorite turtle: Raphael. Usually, the glow figure packaging isn't much different from the regular versions outside of different colors and some GITD accents, but that's not the case here. The slip cover is designed after a mutagen canister, with cracks and ooze all around and the usual character emblem on front. Underneath is a green, slimy box that's all sorts of neat, and the character bio on the back is still there. The box doesn't glow, unfortunately, but at least everything is easy to open and get out. Since this figure is just a redeco, it means the sculpt for Raphael is the same as we saw in the first wave. That means all the same details, with subtle texturing on the plastron and some realistic wrinkling and veins on the body. Like before, Raph has two head sculpts, one based off the original Playmates figure and another being a more modern take. Articulation is the same as well, with a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, and ball-jointed waist. There's a bit of tightness to the joints, but nothing too bad. What is different about Raphael is his color scheme. Standing 6" tall, most of his body is cast in green glow-in-the-dark plastic. He glows quite strongly, especially if you expose him to direct light beforehand. His mask and bands are a bold red, and I like it more than the dark color the regular version had. His belt is red as well, reminding me of the "Storage Shell" turtles from the original toyline. His plastron, nails, and even eyes are yellow, and his carapace is a dark green. The only thing not different is his teeth, which are pearly white. The paint is clean, and overall the color scheme is great. For accessories, Raphael is quite different from his non-glowing counterpart. He has the extra head as mentioned, and both portraits are tight when swapping, but I didn't notice anything at risk. He also gets four pairs of hands: vertically-hinged grips, horizontally-hinged grips, grasping hands, and fists. They swap easily, but he lacks the sai-gripping hands the regular version did. Both grips can hold the sai in his fingers, though, albeit tightly. He also gets a slice of pizza and open and closed turtle coms, but none of the extra weapons or weapons sprue/rack the regular version came with; instead, he gets a non-mutant turtle (lifted from Splinter) and a cracked mutagen canister (from the Mouser set). All of the accessories are the same glowing green as the figure, with some reds and yellows, and they glow just as well. Mutagen Ooze Raphael, as well as the rest of the turtles, is a fun variant with plenty of uniqueness, and besides, who can resist glow-in-the-dark action figures? Their limited release means they're a little harder to track down, but you can grab them from Big Bad Toy Store at $70 each, or if you want to spend less and don't mind not having the slipcover, at Macy's. Yes, Macy's. So much for Super7 direct exclusives, right? - 11/4/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
