Elisa Maza Gargoyles (Neca) (Neca)The world of Gargoyles isn't just about those winged creatures who are "stone by day, warriors by night," there's also plenty of humans, friend and foe, from the past and present, that associate with them. After doing plenty of gargoyles, NECA has recently gotten to some of the humans, including the Manhattan Clan's ally Elisa Maza. The box art continues to be great for this line, with Elisa's being handled by Djordje Djokovic and Raph Lomotan. It fits her character well, given that she's a detective, doing some investigative work. Like Lexington, her box is more around the size of most ultimate figures than the big Gargoyles, but a little deeper to accompany one of her accessories. Elisa is the first NECA Gargoyles figure I covered that isn't sculpted by Djokovic. Rather, she's sculpted by Thomas Rozejowski, who's already done a bit of work for the TMNT line. He still adheres to Djokovic's technique of giving animated characters a more detailed look, and while Elisa's face looks no different from the cartoon, her hair bears overlaying strands that make it look more realistic. She gets three head sculpts - one neutral, one smiling, and one smirking - and while not really different from one another, they look great. Not only that, but she has two swappable hairpieces, one neutral, and the other blowing in the wind. The only other figure I saw this on was the Creepshow one, and here, they pop on and off pretty easily. Standing 6 1/2" tall, Elisa is wearing her usual jacket and jeans, and they're nicely done. The clothes, especially the sleeves, have a lot of wrinkling on them, and it all gives an animated character a slightly more realistic look. The paint is also really good, with clean lines on the face and plenty of wash on the clothes. And unlike her animation model, the zippers and buttons on her jacket are actually colored. The only issues I noticed are a very tiny mark on the smiling face, and some fuzziness and bleed where the pant cuffs meet the shoes. Her belt isn't painted, but since it's mostly hidden under the jacket, there wasn't much need to. Elisa's articulation isn't too much different from what we've seen so far, expect for the lack of wings and tail, of course. She gets a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, and ball-jointed midsection and hips. All of the joints move well, and plenty of them have good range, especially the ankles. Her head is a little restricted by her hair, but this is where the alternate hairpiece comes in handy, with the more dynamic style giving it less limitation, not to mention making certain poses look cooler. For accessories, I already mentioned Elisa has three heads and two hairpieces, and they swap easily, and she also has her badge and flashlight for detective work. Six hands are included, with a pair of fists, a vertically-hinged right grip for the flashlight, a tight left grip for the badge, and a pair of grips with the index finger slightly extended. I assume these are for a pistol, but Elisa doesn't come with one. I guess Disney is just as iffy on including firearms for toys as Warner Bros. is. Elisa also comes with a small slug figure of her pet cat, Cagney, who has detailed fur and a barbell joint for the head. Lastly, she gets a pair of draped wings for Brooklyn, and considering how huge his wings are, it's good for reducing the amount of space he takes up on the shelf. Elisa Maza may just be a human, but she's just as fun as all the gargoyles we've gotten in this line, thanks to some excellent sculpt and paint work, along with a lot of useful articulation. She's great, but I am wishing for the gargoyle version of her from "The Mirror," along with a human Goliath. And of course, we'll need Puck as well to recreate some scenes. - 11/5/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
