Sewer Samurai Leo Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)After the first wave or so of Ninja Turtles figures, Playmates looked into other ways to do the four brothers and occasionally other characters. Kicking off a plethora of quirky turtle variants was the "Disguised Turtles" series, which gave each of the four brothers a different costume. In Leonardo's case, the level-headed Turtle leader became an honorable samurai. Comparing the original Playmates figure to Super7's newer "Ultimate" version, it can be noted that not much has changed, except for the head. The expression looks better than the original figure, with a less awkward-looking mouth, and the eyes aren't as narrow. He's also wearing a golden samurai helmet that hasn't changed too much from the original, aside from it being more golden than bronze this time around. The newer Leo gets an alternate head wearing a threatening-looking mask with golden fangs, and it's clearly something Super7 came up with on their own. It's this kind of creativity that breathes new life into these old designs. For a Playmates Turtle, Sewer Samurai Leo had a surprising amount of color and detail, so Super7 didn't have to make any upgrades in that department. Standing around 6 1/2" tall, Leonardo's outfit is about the same as before, but now he has a neck, so they gave him a black and red collar. The things on his chest don't stick out as much as they used to; did someone think the original looked somewhat obscene because of them? The weapon holsters on the belt have changed, with it now having two on the side, and only one on the back. The paint is good for the most part, with metallic gold and silver, but there is a bit of bleed and uneven edges here and there, and one of the shoulder pads rubbed off onto the carapace. Samurai Leo doesn't move all that different from the other turtles, with a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, and a ball waist. The only real difference is that the knee joints are on the lower leg instead of the upper leg, and they look better here than on other figures, but they don't really swivel, and bend is a bit limited. I've heard about this figure having loose joints, and I can confirm mine has some. The waist is pretty wobbly, and there's some looseness to the hips, but not so much that the figure isn't able to stand, unlike Krang. The design doesn't have much limitations on his movement, and some cool poses can be achieved, especially with all of his accessories. Speaking of which, let's get into those now, starting with the interchangeable parts. There's the alternate masked head which looks awesome, but the socket for it is too small, and I've seen some people break the head joint trying to swap it out. I'd recommend heating up the socket, or even shaving some plastic out with an exacto knife if you have to. I did the latter, but a bit too much, and now it pops on okay, but comes off too easily. Better than it not fitting on at all, I guess. He also has four pairs of hands - splayed, grasping, gripping, and closed - and the pegs have rings around them, likely to ensure they stay in the forearms. However, this led to them being a bit tough to swap, but I haven't had much issues with changing them out. If you run into any trouble though, I'd recommend heating up the forearms. The closed hands have vertical hinges for some reason, likely an error in manufacturing that nobody caught onto, but they really should be lateral. I wish a pair of vertically-hinged grips was included, as to achieve better weapon poses. The original Samurai Leo had a sword with sheath, a shield, and a banner, and all of those are kept here, but with more colors than just solid green, and the "SEWER SAMURAI" flag is now cloth instead of paper. Plenty of new extras are included here, with two additional swords, a butterfly sword, three kunai, two throwing stars (different sculpt from the regular Turtles), and a pair of claws. All of the weapons look great, and you'll have plenty of fun choosing time and again which ones you want to pose him with. Rounding things out are a slice of anchovy pizza and the usual weapon sprue, and that'll be the last time I bring that useless hunk of plastic up for this line, since they aren't doing them anymore. I was surprised to see that Samurai Leo turned out better than I thought he would, with the hands being easier to swap out than expected, along with hips that aren't super floppy and useless. That said, the head swapping should've be easier to do without heating up or shaving off plastic, and a pair of vertically-hinged grips would've been great, but I can live with these issues. He's only $19 at Big Bad Toy Store as I'm typing this up, and now's a great time to grab him. - 11/7/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
