Scarecrow (Batman - Animated Series (McFarlane)) Review
Scarecrow
Batman - Animated Series (McFarlane) (McFarlane)Batman has gathered himself quite the rogues' gallery over the years, with a variety of unique villains for him to face off against. We all know faces like the Joker, the Penguin, Two-Face, amongst others, and we certainly can't forget the terrifying Scarecrow.

In his first appearance in the 90s animated series, "Nothing to Fear," the Scarecrow had a rather goofy look, but his second appearance, "Fear of Victory," updated him to look more sinister. The regular look is included with this figure, and it's nicely captured, with a good expression and some decent paint, but it did notice a few areas of clumping or inconsistent coloring. And if you want Scarecrow with the mask off, a Jonathan Crane head is included. I like this one as well, primarily due to the equally sinister face, and much cleaner paint than the default portrait.

At about 6 1/2" with the disguised head on, Scarecrow is rather skinny compared to the bulkier Batman. The animated style is carried over well into three dimensions, and the articulation is integrated into the sculpt just fine. Truth be told, this is a reuse of a sculpt from the original DC Direct BTAS line, just with slight color differences. The shirt is a brighter red, and a few other colors are adjusted a bit. I assume the difference in colors is so he can be set apart more from the original, but it looks nice, and the cel shading is handled better than on Batman, with clean lines and less of a noticeable contrast.

For such a slender guy, the Scarecrow gets a surprising amount of articulation. The head is a ball/hinge joint with plenty of tilt on the ball, and there's a swivel/hinge at the base of the neck. I would've preferred a simple ball joint there, though, as to allow for more tilt and lean. The shoulders, elbows, and wrists are all swivel hinges, and you can get some good range out of them. The waist is a simple swivel, and below it are ball hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, and swivel/hing ankles (no rocker, sadly). You will want to be careful when moving him due to the thin limbs and joints, and heat may be needed as well. I needed to heat up the head and one of the ankles to get them moving, and I also did a bit of heating to the hips as well, since one of them broke off on Batman, and I didn't want to risk it again.

Dr. Crane gets a few accessories, most of which are from the original figure. I already mentioned the unmasked head, and you'll want to heat it up a lot before popping it onto the neck, lest you want to risk breaking the joint. His default hands are a gripping right and closed left, but they can be swapped out for open hands, which will also need heat to pop on. He also has his scythe, but the gripping hand is a bit too wide open to hold it properly. Like the others in this wave, he gets a character card, and a Condiment King build-a-figure piece, being his upper body and head. When going to pop on the arms, I noticed the sockets have a tight grip, so you'll need heat with those as well.

Scarecrow is a nice figure, but also one you'll want to be careful with. Because of the thin and occasionally tight joints, I can see breakage happening, so get a hair dryer out, blast anything that feels stuck, and you should be good to go. Still, he looks great, and I know those who missed out the first time will be happy to have another shot at him. Oh, and one more thing, there's a "Platinum" version with a brown and yellow color scheme. I don't really like it much, but I assume there's someone out there who does.
