Genghis Frog Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)Considering how the 80s TMNT cartoon was made to get kids (and adults) interested in the toy line, it's a bit of a surprise some characters didn't make it to figure form. Take the Punk Frogs, for instance; Genghis and Napoleon got made (with different designs), but Rasputin and Attila were not, and eventually vanished from the show. I'm 99% sure NECA was the first to do all four frogs, while Super7 only did the two that got the original Playmates treatment. Napoleon got a ReAction, while Genghis gets to join the Ultimates line. Unlike Napoleon, Genghis' toy design wasn't too much different from his toon appearance, but a bit more detailed. His head is covered in warts, and Super7 (with Four Horsemen's help) proceeded to take that design and modernize it. The head seems to have more warts than the original figure, and while he looks freaky, it's a good freaky. There's also a lot of wash on the froggy skin, making it pop so much more. Genghis also has an alternate portrait with his mouth open and big tongue out. Both heads get surprisingly clean edges on the pearly white eyes and teeth, which is another plus. Genghis stands around 6 1/2" tall, and believe me, he's pretty big and chunky in hand. Too big, maybe, and I feel he should be a little smaller than the turtles. Still, he looks great, and he's dressed in the same outfit as before: blue and yellow Hawaiian shirt, two-color shorts, and a gold necklace that's now a separate piece instead of being sculpted onto the body. The shirt has a noticeable texture to it, giving a bit more realism to the design. The paint on stuff like the watch, shirt pattern, and wrist/ankle bands is mostly clean, aside from a bit of minor clumping and bleed. Still, I don't think there's been a TMNT Ultimate this visually appealing since Baxter Stockman, and I'm certainly impressed with the output here. The original Genghis only moved at the head, shoulders, wrists/forearms, and hips, so of course Super7 had room to include a lot more. Their take on the frog has a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, and swivel waist and thighs. All of the joints feel nice and tight, and also get some pretty good range, with the chest in particular being surprisingly useful. This is where a nit I have with the sculpt comes into play, however, and it involves the hips. Whilst having great range, there are big gaps between the pelvis and thighs, and it throws off the look a bit for me. That aside, you'll be able to get him into plenty of poses, and he should hold up well. Aside from the alternate head and three sets of hands - loose grips like the original figure, gripping, and closed - Genghis is one of the few TMNT Ultimates that doesn't get anything outside of what the original had. The necklace counts as an accessory this time around since it's removable, and there's also a pair of blue sunglasses and a bandolier with soda can grenades. The bandolier clips around the waist with ease, but the grenades are molded as part of the belt instead of separate pieces, which sucks. Genghis still gets his weird tongue gun and boogie board shield, and both are big weapons, meaning they can weigh the shoulders down, so take note of that. The tongue gun can extend and retract just like the original, and the board has a leg strap similar to Surfer Mikey. Be careful when opening the strap, as the peg ripped off on mine trying to do so. While there's a couple issues with Genghis, they for me only barely take away from his greatness. He's a sturdy, well-designed figure with useful articulation and some fun accessories, and feels quite "Ultimate," to say the least. Since the TMNT Ultimates line is starting to shift more towards unique, original stuff (as well as our first modern 4Kids Turtles figures), I wonder if they'll do their own takes on Rasputin and Attila. I feel they could turn out great if they do them well. - 12/22/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
