Mon*Star (Red) (SilverHawks (Super7)) Review
Mon*Star (Red)
SilverHawks (Super7) (Super7)Having been created following the success of Thundercats, it's worth noting Silverhawks took cues from it. A group of semi-humans going up against a group of funky villain designs, including a leader that can transform into a stronger version of himself. Unlike Mumm-Ra, though, Mon*Star looked pretty strong pre-transformation, but his bulked-up form is a true beast.

While the Hawks have a blue box, the Mob gets a red one. It's pretty shiny, and gets Mon*Star's face on the front, and other than that, it's not too much different from the good guys. There's some tape and ties to get rid of, but it shouldn't be too hard.

Oh, one more thing about the box: it's huge, and that's because the figure itself is huge. Mon*Star stands about 11" tall up to the tip of the spike on the top of his head, and while he has chunky proportions, he's more hollow plastic than solid, which prevents him from being too heavy. Four Horsemen handled the sculpting duties like near-usual, and he's very spot-on to the show. The torso seems to have been designed after a cat's face, or pre-transformation Mon*Star. He's mostly composed of various shades of red, along with a few oranges, and the colors have a matte finish all around. Much better than cheap-looking shiny plastic.

Mon*Star looked pretty menacing pre-transformation, with a lion-like face, but his robotic-looking transformed appearance is just as likely to strike fear into you. The blank yellow eyes, sharp teeth, multiple spikes around the head… definitely an intimidating look. It looks great in figure form, and even though the head is a soft, vinyl-feeling material, those spikes can still jab you. Paint is good, but there are a couple uneven edges and some bleed, primarily on the orange rings around the spikes.

The leader of the Mob moves pretty similar to most other Ultimates, with a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, and swivel biceps, waist, thighs, shins, calves, and… chest? Normally the chest joint on these Silverhawks figures is a (admittedly useless) ball-peg, so Mon*Star having just a swivel there is odd. If that's all you're willing to do for movement there, then why bother having it move? The design does limit some joints a bit, such as the head and elbows, but you can still manage some pretty cool poses. There are a few issues with joints, however, such as a shin swivel that needed heat to get moving, slightly loose ankles, and a really loose left elbow swivel. A friend of mine suggested putting some paper towel around the elbow peg, so I may try that.

For such a large figure, the amount of accessories Mon*Star comes with is surprising. He gets five pairs of hands: closed, relaxed, grasping, gripping, and gun grip. They give quite a bit of resistance when swapping, but you shouldn't risk anything when popping them in and out, though a couple hands have stuck hinges, so use hot water/a hair dryer/heat gun or free them up. He comes with an alternate head as well, which isn't too different from the regular portrait, but with a slot in place of the left eye to accommodate a star-shaped laser blast. Speaking of effect pieces, there's two pairs of them to plug into the elbows; a set of lasers, and a set of rocket thrust flames. They plug in with no issue, and will certainly spice up his look on the shelf. Rounding things out are his laser lance rifle, which is almost as long as he is tall, and Sky Shadow, his answer to Tallyhawk. Sky Shadow looks great, and his wings can even move front to back.

After initial doubts over doing toy-inspired figures, Super7 decided to try it with wave four, consisting of Kenner tribute versions of wave one, including Mon*Star. This version of him has a simpler color scheme, with only two shades of red and white eyes. The effect pieces are gone, but he still has his extra hands, rifle, and Sky Shadow. The alternate head is replaced with a pre-transformed Mon*Star head lifted from the Kenner figure's head-flipping gimmick, and direct pre-orders of the whole wave through Super7 direct would've given you another version of it with more Kenner-accurate colors. I won't be picking him up, but if you decide to, I won't judge.

The articulation could've been handled better, but that's my only issue with Mon*Star. He has an imposing presence on the shelf, and all the accessories certainly help. At $85, he's much more than the already high Ultimates price, but you can get him for less now (I only paid $22 for mine), and I wouldn't sleep on those deals.
