Wolverine Marvel (Mondo) (Mondo)I said a while back that I wasn’t too big into Marvel, but I can say for sure that my favorite from them right now is X-Men. I’ve been watching the animated series on Disney+ and I’ve fallen in love with it. It hits all the right marks, and knowing that it’s getting a revival due out next year has me excited. Mondo got the license to it last year, and after two special versions of him, we finally got the regular Wolverine. Mondo tends to do pretty nice packaging, and they peppered Wolverine’s box with storyboard drawings from various episodes. The flap on the front opens to show some text on the back, written by two of the show’s crew members. There’s a few plastic ties to cut out for the figure and one of the accessories, and an extra head tying the plastic tray to the cardboard. Once you got everything cut out, though, you’ll find that it’s easy to take out and put back in everything. The sculptors here did a great job replicating Wolverine’s appearance, which in animation is none too different from most of his incarnations. He benefits from four different head sculpts, with the first showing gritted teeth. The second is a bit calmer, with a closed mouth and a raised brow. The third is an unmasked head, and it’s a shame we don’t have an extra mask piece to go with it. The fourth is not of Wolverine, but rather of Morph, a recurring character in the show. All four heads look great, and the paint is pretty clean on the lines, though there was a green mark on the unmasked head. The rest of Wolverine’s body is also well-done, with proper proportions and good blending of articulation with it. The claws pop out of his hands as well, in case you don’t want him to always be battle-ready. Replicating the art style of the cartoon, he’s painted with black outlines around the facial features and musculature, and while I like the cel shading, I would’ve done it in a different way, rather the have the “light” shine off his right side. There’s also a bit of paint rub-off on the boots, especially on the right one. This is a 1/6 scale figure, and Wolverine stands around 11”, since he’s supposed to be 5’3” (according to the bio). Wolverine’s articulation is nothing too fancy, but it’s enough for standard poses. The ball-jointed head has good range, mostly up-and-down, and the heads pop off easily enough, but popping them on can be kind of tough. The arms have swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders, elbows, and wrists, but they did the elbows in an unusual way. They hinge at the elbow, but the swivel is located above that, and I would’ve liked it more if they had a bicep swivel. The wrists look like they turn where the joint goes into the hand, but they don’t. The ball-jointed chest has plenty of tilt, and the waist swivels as well. The hips are ball-joints that go in and out well, but not so much forward and back. Lastly, there’s nice swivel/hinge joints at the knees and ankles, and the knees are the double-jointed type. While some of the joints felt a bit awkward and tight, he moves well all around. There isn’t a large amount of accessories, but they’re all fitting for the character. Aside from the extra heads, Wolverine has a couple different hands. He’s wearing a pair of fists in the box, but you can swap those out for a pair of open hands, a pair of grips, and an extra left, gesturing whatever poor sap to come over and try to pick a fight with him. As I mentioned before, you can pop the claws off the fists and plug them into the extra hands, but be careful doing so. There’s also an extra pair of fists with electricity running between the claws, replicating a shot from the intro. Though since these claws pop out of the hands as well, couldn’t we have gotten just them and not an extra pair of fists? Aside from the all the extra heads and hands, Wolverine has two other notable items. One of them is the infamous picture frame of Cyclops and Jean Grey, coming from the episode “Captive Hearts”. You can remove the picture itself from the frame, and slide it out of the plastic protecting it, allowing you to replace the photo with an image of your own choosing. The other is a turkey leg, a nod to the “Dark Phoenix” arc from season 3. Lastly, we got a display stand, but the prongs are rather crooked, and they don’t grip too well around Wolverine’s torso. I don’t think he’ll really need it, though. As I mentioned earlier, a mask piece to go with the unmasked head would’ve been a nice inclusion. Wolverine isn’t the perfect work of art I expected, mainly for the $200 price point, but I managed to get him for a couple dollars off, and overall, he’s pretty nice. Some improvements could’ve been made, but I feel that Mondo put as much heart into him as possible. The only other X-Men character they got planned right now is Magneto, and we haven’t seen anything beyond concept art, but I hope they do Gambit and Beast in the future. -5/24/2022 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
