Accessory Set Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Everyone knows action figures are more fun when they have stuff to play with, and NECA certainly knows too, hence why they've put out plenty of accessory sets for their various lines. In the realm of Ninja Turtles, they've done really fun accessory sets for the first two live-action films, and following those is one related to the retro cartoon. It was sold as part of Target's Haul-a-thon event last year, but I had no luck finding it in-store. Good thing NECA sold it through their online store, or I'd be out of luck. Befitting the toon line, we have Dan Elson's illustrations again, based off the old VHS tapes. The art works great, showing off some of the stuff you'll find in the set, and there's a couple photos on the back. Like past accessory sets, this is a windowless box, and everything can be easily removed from the tray inside. This set doesn't just have accessories; it has figures as well. The star players of this set are toddler versions of Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo, coming from "Back to the Egg" and "Adventures in Turtle-Sitting." Sculpted by Brodie Perkins, the designs match the source material well, and each has a different head sculpt befitting their personalities. Leo and Mikey are quite happy, while Donnie and Raph are a bit more serious. Aside from the heads and belt initials, the tooling on all four is pretty much the same. Standing small at 2 1/4" tall, the aged-down turtles all bear clean paint work and lines, but they don't have the (admittedly half-assed) shading most figures in the line get. I'm not complaining, though. They're pretty posable with ball-jointed heads, hips, and mask ties, along with swivel/hinge shoulders and ankles. It can be tricky to keep them standing with the small feet, and I wish they had wrist joints to work with the weapons more. Yes, they get tiny versions of the Turtles' signature weapons, with katanas, a staff, sai, and nunchucks, and they hold them well. There's another figure in the set, the Mobile Armored Computerized Combatant, or MACC for short, coming from "Attack of Big MACC." Standing 4" tall, he's a simple design that's accurate to his one appearance in the show, and the paint is near perfect. He has two removable blasters, one in the head and one in the back, and the former can be replaced with a little bit for the head. For articulation, he gets ball pegs for the head and shoulders, hinged elbows, a double-ball-peg chest, and swivels for the waist and removable blasters. The blasters on the shoulders can't turn like in the show, but I assume it couldn't have been possible to add those and preserve the sculpt. Speaking of robots, we get another Mouser in the set, because you can't have too much of those. The other big draw in the set is the Turtles' television, and alongside the toddlers, it's my favorite inclusion here. It's another screen-accurate piece, complete with a VCR on top, and the VCR can be removed alongside the antenna on top of that, the latter being able to plug into the TV directly. The top of the TV can be removed so you can insert one of nine different screens, featuring April, Vernon, Donatello in disguise, Bebop and Rocksteady, Ace Duck (also from the Big MACC episode), a wrestling match, a rampaging dinosaur in town, a cheesy monster movie, and a video game. Also going with the television are a VHS tape that goes into the VCR (the box says two are included, but there's only one) and a video game console with two controllers. Plenty of other extras of various sizes are packed in, with two baby pizza monsters (different sculpts from what we've gotten before), an opening pizza box with a whole pizza inside (lifted from the ultimate Pizza Monster, but with a different box design), a painting of a piece of cheese, a backpack, a blowtorch, a ray gun, a "Turtle Tracker," the Star of Hoboken diamond, and Rocksteady's season one helmet. Speaking of accessories meant for past figures, there's a surprising inclusion in the form of a new head for the SDCC-exclusive human Baxter Stockman, depicting him wearing Shredder's helmet and laughing maniacally. I had no trouble swapping out heads for the figure, and he looks great with it. This is no doubt a fun release, with a good amount of accessories, and even figures, that add plenty of fun to your display. While it being impossible to find in-store was a downside, I'm grateful to have gotten the chance to get it from NECA direct, and hopefully you didn't pass on it. - 1/17/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
