Jubilee (Mondo Exclusive) (Marvel (Mondo)) Review
Jubilee (Mondo Exclusive)
Marvel (Mondo) (Mondo)If you haven't been following Mondo, they've been putting out a line of sixth-scale X-Men figures based off the 90s animated series. I got their first release, Wolverine, a long while back, but I haven't really been getting into the line, primarily due to the prices. I ultimately caved into it and picked up another one of the heroes: the young Jubilee.

The packaging is similar to Wolverine's in that it has storyboard images on the front, but the back instead has a few model sheet drawings of Jubilee, with a full color image of her covering the storyboards on front. Dan Vessenmayer, one of the crew members of the show, provided the art, so it's good to know they were able to get him involved. It's a bit easier to get everything inside out with Jubilee, as the figure stand is no longer sealed to the cardboard interior, which you no longer have to remove to get the tray out. There's no ties holding in anything, and the paper on almost everything helps keep the contents safe during shipping.

Sculpted by Alex Brewer, Jubilee looks accurate to the show, including her somewhat unkempt hair. She benefits from having four different heads: one neutral, one happy, one with the shades down, and one blowing bubble gun. All four options fit Jubilee's personality, and you're more than likely to go back to her every now and then to switch out the heads. The paint is pretty good too, thanks to the clean edges and few noticeable issues. However, the paint on the hair did rub off a bit onto the back of the neck, but it's covered up, thankfully.

Jubilee's outfit is unmistakably 90s, with her long jacket, shorts, boots, and et cetera. It looks very nice, thanks to the bold colors. Tom Rozejowski (whose work for NECA I've covered a bit) handled the paint here, and Mondo chose the best guy for it (check out his stuff on Twitter and Instagram and you'll know). The shading on the outfit is different all over, and I like the look of that more than suggesting a light source like past Mondo figures, and the clean edges help as well. I would be careful with the little things on the collar, as there is a chance at least one of them will fall off and need to be glued back on. Jubilee stands about 9 1/4" tall, making her a bit smaller than your average 1/6 figure.

Some good articulation is present here, and it's nothing like the bodies Sideshow and Hot Toys use, but still useful for Jubilee. She gets a barbell head with a decent amount of tilt, but nothing too extreme. The arms get swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel biceps, and hinged elbows, but the wrists are unusual; there's a hinge of course, and a swivel where the joint goes into the hand, but the end going into the forearm is square, so you'll have to pop it out and replace it depending on which way you want the hinge to go. The ball chest and waist work great in unison, and the ball hips, double-hinged knees, and swivel/hinge ankles provide good leg poses. There are swivels at the boots, but only the left one would budge for me, and I don't want to risk any breakage trying to free the right one. The joints are tight enough so she can hold any pose, but better wrists and swivel thighs would've helped her.

Jubilee is pretty well-outfitted with extras, including four different heads, which swap with little issue (I would suggest a bit of heat to make them fit on easier). She gets some different hand options as well, including two open hands, two loose grips, two fists, and a pointing right with little sparks. There's two sets of hands demonstrating her powers, one set shooting stars, and the other with big firework blasts. The paint on the effects is great, and the tight joints ensure the arms will hold up even with these hands. She also gets a drink cup and some chili fries, like every mall babe should have, and a figure stand similar to what Wolverine got, but a bit better here.

As with most of Mondo's figures, Jubilee received a "limited edition," exclusive to their site and packed with additional accessories, such as two extra heads. One head comes from "Jubilee's Fairytale Theater" (an episode I admittedly haven't seen yet), with her hair down, elven ears, and a headband. It's a nice episode-specific look, but the long hair coming in contact with the collar limits movement. The other head depicts her with shades down and a helmet, going hand-in-hand with the skateboard and kneepads. The kneepads are rubber and clip onto the legs with ease, and the skateboard along with the figure stand allow for some pretty good display options. The exclusive version gives you quite a bit more, and since it's only $10 extra, I don't see any reason not to go for it.

Compared to Wolverine, Jubilee is quite an improvement. She feels much nicer in-hand, and the great paint work combined with plenty of accessories makes her an enjoyable release. I'll be picking up more from the line, but given that these are usually over $200 each, I probably won't be getting them too often.
