Night Ninja Leo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Collection) Review
Night Ninja Leo
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Collection (Playmates)Even with NECA and Super7 putting out plenty of good Ninja Turtle figures, Playmates, the originator of turtle toys, has been keeping up with not only new figures, but plenty of unexpected comebacks from the late 80s and 90s. The old "Mutations" sub-line has been resurfacing for some time already, and joining them are two of the "Auto-Mutations:" Leonardo and Raphael. Hey, if they can bring back those weird Pizza Tossin' Turtles, I don't think anything is off-limits… provided they still have the molds.

The Mutations came in window boxes with flaps rather than cardbacks, and their reissues keep those, but the Auto Mutations now come on cardbacks for some reason. That said, the artwork from the original packaging is retained, and provided you have some scissors on-hand, these should be easy to get open.

Our Night Ninjas, Leo and Raph, look very similar to one another, and noticeably share quite a bit of tooling. Standing around 5 1/4" tall, both come dressed in karate gi, with rather bulky sculpts. Raph has a bit more of a smile than Leo, with that alongside the skin and outfit colors setting them apart. The paint is mostly clean, and there's not really any missing paint applications like some of the reissues we've seen. The feet are different on both as well, with concealed weaponry; Leo has flip-out blades on top of his feet, while Raphael has daggers that flip-out from his soles.

The "Auto-Mutations" name comes from how they change appearance. Just squeeze the legs, and their backs pop open for battle gear to flip over their heads and chests. The feature works just fine, and the gear looks pretty darn cool too. In addition to those, their are thigh pads that swing down from underneath the gi, and Raph is the only one with missing paint apps, as his pads don't have the yellow button paint on the corners like the original toy. Both figures have limited articulation, bearing only swivels at the shoulders, forearms, wrists (right wrist on Leo is stuck), and ankles. I wish they had movement at the heads as well, to allow them to look around (7/18/24 update: They do have head movement! You just need to heat them up). Still, without those or hip movement, the amount of poses they can take is limited.

Both turtles get unique "mutating" accessories, with Leo having a weird tonfa than conceals a katana on one then. The katana just slides out, and the handle on the other end can be flipped down and pushed forward to make a regular tonfa. The original had a grappling hook, but it's been omitted from this reissue for some reason. Raphael gets his sai, of course, and the prongs flip over the middle blades, then connect at the ends to form a bo staff. He still keeps his secondary weapon, being a slingshot. Bit of an unusual weapon for a ninja to wield, but eh, why not. Both turtles also have a clear mutagen canister, a neat little bonus.

It's pretty unexpected to see these back out there, but I'm more than happy to get them. Both are pretty neat figures, with very few changes from the originals, and whilst Walmart-exclusives, they shouldn't be hard to find. It'd be cool if the other Auto-Mutations got reissued, but if not, I have no problem getting the originals.
