Storm Shadow G.I. Joe (Super7) (Super7)Everybody knows ninjas are cool, hence why G.I. Joe has two; Snake Eyes on the side of good, and Storm Shadow on the side of evil. Snake Eyes is the more popular one, probably since he doesn't talk and has a wolf buddy, but Storm is pretty cool too. It feels like the packaging for Super7's Joe Ultimates changes every wave. The second wave started taping flaps closed and using plastic ties, and now the third wave has apparently done away with making details on the packaging "stand out," for lack of a better term. The emblem, logo, dog tags, etc. are now just flat; nothing raised. It still looks pretty good, and getting most of the contents out should be easy. Like his adversary Snake Eyes, most of Storm Shadow's head is covered, but his eyes are at least exposed. It's a simple design that would've been hard for S7's sculpting team to screw up, and his eyes bear clean paint, and convey his no-nonsense attitude. He comes with an alternate head, wearing a diving mask. The clear plastic front is nice, but the black parts of it have fuzzy edges. At about 7" tall, Storm Shadow has an almost all-white uniform, looking like a typical ninja garb. There are no sleeves on his top, and the forearm wraps are painted on (not a separate piece like the Hasbro Classified version), but have a little bit of bleed onto the skin. He has weapon storage on the back, attached to a soft, somewhat rubbery strap over the torso. The equally rubbery belt has two shuriken sculpted as part of it, and are even painted on the inside of the belt, not a detail anyone would've expected. Speaking of paint, this figure has a completely matte coat; none of the shine seen on previous figures. It gives the already cartoon-accurate sculpt a more animated feel, and is a nice improvement over the glossy skin from the previous wave. While the paint has improved, the articulation hasn't changed too much. SS gets a ball head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles, swivel biceps, thighs, and shins, ab crunch, and hinged knees. Most of the joints move well, and should hold a pose, but the head and waist aren't very good. Neither of them really have any tilt, and I think the waist is really just meant to be a swivel (not to mention it was really tight at first, and needed heat to get moving). The ab crunch works fine, but I would've liked a bit more lean out of it. Storm Shadow is well-equipped with extras, including five sets of hands - closed, gripping, bow-and-arrow holding, loosely gripping, and flat palm - as well as an alternate right forearm with his Arashikage tattoo exposed. The forearms swap with little issue, but those hands are REALLY tough to swap, so you may need some heat for them. He has three bladed weapons, a katana, a wakizashi (shorter sword), and a tanto (basically a knife). The larger swords can be stored in the sheaths in back, and the tanto fits in a slot in the belt. The bow comes with three arrows which can also be stored in the back, and the proper hands hold them well, but the string keeps wanting to retract and send the arrow flying. He also gets nunchucks, three shuriken, and the Excalibur from the episode of the same name (which is also where the diving mask head comes from), with a cool glow-in-the-dark blade. I'm not sure what the purpose of the solid blue sniper rifle is; it's probably from the Marvel comics or an episode of the cartoon, but he can't hold it properly and doesn't really fit his character anyways, so what's the point of including it? It feels like Super7 is improving on this line a bit with Storm Shadow. While issues are still present, the aesthetic is much better, and the accessories are darn cool too (save for that pointless rifle). If they can work out the articulation a bit more, they'd have a winner on their hands. Now that he's out there, I hope they can go back to the other ninja, Snake Eyes, and do his V2 look to go with his foe. - 2/24/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
