Patrick Star Spongebob Squarepants (Super7) (Super7)There's been many SpongeBob toys and collectibles over the years, but Super7 may be the first to make action figure that cater to today's standards. Their first wave of Ultimates, featuring SpongeBob and Sandy, benefitted with great sculpts and paint, useful articulation, and plenty of classic accessories. The second wave came out not too long ago, and with it is the long-awaited arrival of SpongeBob's best friend Patrick Star. It looks a bit more obvious this wave that Super7 was basing the sculpts off stock art, and Patrick in particular looks close to how he did in season one, with a notable underbite and the forehead leaning in a bit. Even if it's an older design, the sculpt is accurate, and paint is good too, although there's some uneven edges for the eyes. He also comes with the iconic "Who you calling Pinhead?" head, and it looks spot-on to the source episode, but it wouldn't be my first choice for an alternate portrait. Patrick is a big, chunky figure, standing about 7 1/4" tall, but it puts him in scale with the first wave. The design is pretty simple, given that he's a starfish and all. I found the proportions looked quite off in promo images and renders, but in-hand, he looks much nicer, though all those joints in the arms throws off their look a bit. His shorts are a separate, rubbery piece over the legs, allowing Super7 to preserve the look while still including useful articulation. The paint all over is mostly clean, and there's no noticeable shine, but the flowers on the shorts suffer from some paint loss. Despite Patrick's simple design, Super7 was able to give him plenty of articulation, including a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, ball-jointed waist and hips, and swivel thighs. Well, the waist is supposed to be a ball-joint, but it only swivels more than anything. Most of the joints move nice and tight, and the hips can get some good range even with the shorts covering them. The wrists were stuck very tight out of the box, however, and needed a lot of heat to get moving, so take note of that. While Patrick seems to be a little lighter on accessories than SpongeBob and Sandy were, they still made sure to give him some fun accessories. As mentioned already, he has the "Pinhead Larry" portrait, which is good for a chuckle, but I wish there was a better option. Six hands are packed in - a pair of default points, a pair of grips, and pointing and open palm left hands - and they swap with ease. Like SpongeBob, he has a jellyfishing net and a jellyfish, and neither are reuse (the jellyfish is bigger than what SpongeBob got). He also comes with a Krusty Krab hat and phone (which makes me wish he had a "This is Patrick!" head), and his pet "snail" Rocky. All of his accessories come from classic episodes, and allow for some nice display options. Patrick is a pretty solid figure all around, keeping the same quality and creativity wave one had, and with some iconic extras as well. If you already have SpongeBob, you may as well get his buddy now, so they can hang out on your shelf. - 3/3/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
