Squidward Tentacles (Spongebob Squarepants (Super7)) Review
Squidward Tentacles
Spongebob Squarepants (Super7) (Super7)Given that one half of the second wave of Super7's SpongeBob Ultimates is dopey, cheerful Patrick, it's no surprise the other half is his opposite, the sophisticated, grumpy Squidward.

Like the others, Super7 seemingly relied on older model sheets for designing these sculpts, and while Squidward is accurate, he's also a little off-looking. His default portrait has a zombie-like stare, and the mouth looks weird due to how curved back the corners are. Giving him half-lidded eyes would make him look better, and give him a fitting expression. The additional heads are much better, with one being a more exasperated look, wearing the Krusty Krab hat, and the other is his ever-memetic "unsure" look. The unsure head is my favorite of the three, thanks to the great detail, but it needs some more paint to match how it looked in-show more. Speaking of, the paint on all three heads is mostly clean, but the default head has some red marking on the nose.

At about 7 1/2" tall, Squidward is the tallest in the line. He and Patrick make me think these figures are a bit too tall, and makes me feel that these guys should've been an inch or two smaller to make them fit with other Ultimates more. Anyways, they did a good job capturing Squidward's body, managing to work in plenty of articulation whilst preserving his slender look. One thing to note is that although his four legs are sculpted together in two pairs, his feet are all separate, as S7 wanted to achieve (at least something close to) his usual stance. Squidward has simple colors, and the paint is mostly good aside from some bleed here and there, but the main benefit is the matte finish, avoiding the cheap, plastic look some Ultimates had in the past (like their Disney line).

Squidward is next to Sandy as the most articulated figure in the line, as his proportions are less restrictive on movement. He gets a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, and swivel waist and thighs. It's enough to manage plenty of poses, but my main area of concern is the hips. The hip joints are rather loose, not helped by the solid heads, and it affects his ability to stand, so make sure to get a base for him. Some of the joints felt a bit tight at first, and while they worked free mostly easily for me, you'll still want to take a bit of care due to his thin limbs.

Squidward feels pretty light on accessories, moreso than Patrick, but he does have three different portraits as mentioned earlier. They capture his moods well, and I would recommend using a hair dryer to swap them. He also has three pairs of hands - relaxed, curled back, and gripping - as well as his clarinet, "Krusty Krab Unfair" sign, and a double-decker Krabby Patty. It's not a lot, and I wish they threw in another episode-specific extra or two, but it works well for the character. And for the Krabby Patty, Super7 employed what may be the first use of magnets in an Ultimates figure, with them being present in the relaxed hands so Squidward can hold it. Smart thinking!

While Squidward is a fine figure and I'm glad to have one of him in this style, he suffers from loose hips, a bland default head, and lack of accessories. If Super7 ironed out these issues, he'd be a much more enjoyable figure. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Mr. Krabs, but given how the skeleton Spongebob shown off last year was cancelled just as quickly as it was revealed, things don't look too hopeful for the future of this line.
