Manterror (Transformers - Beast Wars) Review
Manterror
Transformers - Beast Wars (Hasbro)Whenever anyone talks smack about Beast Wars designs, I point to the bugs.
Manterror is a bit of an odd duck, in that he's one of those toy-only characters that didn't see any presence at all in fiction at the time. Selling on design alone, he was a winner in my book. Kicking off with beast mode, there was no way they could pull off full-length legs that could hold it up, so I can forgive the stumpy limbs. The oversized claws look strangely thick and powerful, like there's some crustacean mixed in there, which is interesting. The only real complaint I have is the mouth articulation: it reminds me of Flygon more than any arthropod. But hey, those balljoint wings have pretty good range.
The color scheme is good: lime green and translucent green plastics, with a few touches of translucent purple. There's some good airbrushing on the eyes and head, too. The bold red stripes really make the abdomen pop.
Transformation is kind of fun. It's not too complex, but still engaging. Robot mode shows a bit of ingenuity, bulking up the torso with the folded-up legs, and repurposing the forewings as coattails of some sort, but of course the arms are just the arms. I love the maniacal grin on his creepy little noggin. You can tell he was designed in the 90s. Unlike the mammals and reptiles, there's a fairly smooth blend to the arthropodal entries, with no obnoxious kibble beyond the occasional arm-legs. And you almost never see large hanging panels everywhere.
That said, it is a product of its time, and some of the joints are a tad bulbous. It's quite poseable despite the limited leg movement, thanks to the squarish feet planting well at a direct angle.
After all these years (and I played with this a lot as a kid), the smattering of balljoints common to BW is still nice and tight across the board, with no signs of stress fractures (looking at you, Powerpinch). Your mileage may vary. That's knees, hips, neck, shoulders, and elbows, plus hinged ankles and claws. Said claws drag on the ground at the wrist in a neutral pose, look nightmarishly gangly when not folded up, and carry translucent purple discs that fire via a ridged button along the top. They get a range of a couple feet, but of course like to roll. Not recommended for cat owners.
If you're a bug nut, BW fan, or Insecticon lover, this is quite a prize. Reprolabels has you covered on the cheap if you want Decepticon logos, too.
