Baxter Stockman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)Unlike everything that followed after, the Mirage TMNT comics didn't have a huge cast of mutants and other non-human characters, but it still had some pretty interesting humans. One of the first human villains after Shredder's "demise" is the evil scientist Baxter Stockman. Despite his presence throughout the franchise, his role in the original comics was minimal. Over at NECA, Richard Force and David Giraud brought the original Baxter into action figure form. The default portrait is a sly grin, and it's very accurate to how he appears in the comic, but it can be swapped out for a more sinister look with a wider grin and visible forehead wrinkles. The hair has a lumpy texture, giving it a bit more definition, and the paint is good, though the alternate head has better work. At about 6 1/4" tall, Baxter's outfit is nothing too exciting; it's just a sweater with a blue collar sticking out, and gray jeans with a belt. Still, the sculpt on the body is pretty good, with plenty of wrinkles on the clothes, and the paint is excellent. The line work is all clean, and speaking off, there's a couple black "outlines" to give him more of a comic feel. The articulation is quite plentiful, and a bit more than other figures, with a barbell head and chest, ball-jointed neck and hips, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows (double-jointed), wrists, and ankles, swivel waist, thighs, and shins, and double-hinged knees. The shins were a little tight, but everything else moved with no issue. There aren’t a lot of accessories for Baxter, but there is one important extra: the Mouser. This is the same one we got with Splinter last year, and it makes just as much sense to include with Baxter as it does him. Again, the Mouser gets a hinged head, jaw, knees, and ankles, ball-jointed neck, and swivel hips. Two rather specific extras are included with him, one being the computer/monitor with keyboard that he used to surveil April, and the other being a scale model of the RETXAB building, in case you're wondering what that small rectangle is. In addition to the extra head, he has six interchangeable hands: two closed, two gripping, pointing left, and grasping right (for holding the model). Now for a human on the side of good. The Donatello one-shot gave us Kirby, a comic artist with a magic pencil living in April's apartment building. Despite being just a one-shot character, he was memorable for being based off of famous comic artist Jack Kirby, and his story got adapted into an episode of the 2003 Turtles cartoon. Now he's being immortalized into a figure, coming out alongside Baxter. The reason for that is quite obvious, as he mostly shares the same sculpt as Baxter, just with different outfit colors. Unique tooling here are his forearms, with the rolled-up sleeves being separate pieces from the exposed arms, and his head. The confident smile looks great on him, and again, the hair has a pretty nice texture, with some "shine" painted on. He too was sculpted by Richard Force, but Giraud had no involvement with this guy. The paint is just as clean, if not cleaner, but the clothing wrinkles are different. He stands just as tall as Baxter, and moves just the same. Kirby is well-outfitted with extras, and although he doesn't get an alternate head, he does get an important accessory in his pencil, with the magic crystal tied to it. It's very small, but I'm impressed by the paint work on such a tiny piece. There's also his sketchbook, with a drawing of Donatello on front ("Life at best is bittersweet") and a weird creature on back. A different one of the creatures Kirby created is included as a pack-in, standing a bit under 3 1/2" tall. The paint work is fine for the most part, and it gets ball-joints for the head, shoulders, and hips, along with a little weapon for it to wield (you will need to pry open the hand to get it in). Kirby too has six interchangeable hands - two closed, two gripping, wide grip left, and pencil-holding right - and the gravitic equalizer. It's the same one Fugitoid got, but more solid blue. NECA put out some great figures here, but I feel Kirby will be the more popular one. He's based off a famous comic artist, and I bet even those who aren't interested in the license will get him just to have a Jack Kirby figure. Both are at Target right now as part of their annual Haul-a-thon, but if you don't have any luck finding them there, wait a few months and they should be available everywhere else. - 4/17/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
