Soundwave (G1) (Transformers (Super7)) Review
Soundwave (G1)
Transformers (Super7) (Super7)I think it's clear now that Super7's Transformers Ultimates line is done for. We haven't seen any waves go up for pre-order since the end of 2022, and with complaints about the quality and articulation, alongside most of the figures having gone on sale, Super7 may have felt the line wasn't worth continuing. On a more positive note, they at least gave us fan-favorite Soundwave.

Soundwave has a rather unique head design (though not as unique as Shockwave), with no visible mouth and red, visor-like eyes. It gives him bit more of an ominous vibe than the other Decepticons, and Four Horsemen did a great job matching his animated appearance. Back then, Transformer designs weren't consistent across media, let alone toys, and Soundwave's alternate heads reflect that. One of them originates from the original toy, with yellow eyes and a completely different shape, and it's accurate to the first Soundwave. The other comes from the Marvel comics, and while a bit similar from the cartoon design, the visible nose and mouth make it stand out. This was how he appeared in the comic at times, and it's a great look. The paint on all three heads is fine, though there are some uneven edges, including some discoloration on the back of the toy head.

Standing 7 1/2" tall, Soundwave's body is clearly his cartoon design, since that's the main vibe Super7 went for. The design is accurate to the source material, and I can't help but feel he looks nicer than previous figures, due to the bold colors and finish. The paint could be better, however, as he suffers from uneven edges, slop, and marks, something that could've been avoided on a simple design like this. He does benefit from some special features, showing Super7 can get innovative when they feel like it. There is working tape storage in the chest, just push down the little button to open it up, and taking a cue from the original toy is the backpack; it can't clip onto anything, but it can open to reveal storage for his weapons, including the removable blaster next to his head.

Soundwave has mostly good articulation, but like the others, it suffers from various limitations. The head is a barbell joint, but there's not much tilt, and you'll need to pull it up a bit to actually get some range out of it. The swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps, and hinged elbows with forearm swivels work great, and can achieve good arm poses. The chest is a ball-joint as opposed to an ab crunch, and the waist swivels, but the backpack prevents both from moving a lot. The leg movement is no different from the others, with swivel/hinge hips and ankles, swivel thighs and shins, and hinged knees (actually swivel/hinge, but I wouldn't try turning them).

If you like interchangeable hands, then good news, Soundwave has a ton: two closed, two gripping, two gun-gripping, two open, splayed right, and pointing left. The bad news is that they're very hard to swap, and you'll want to heat them up beforehand. The heads swap more easily, however, and you may be swapping them out often depending on your preferred design. Soundwave also has his concussion blaster, with a retracting barrel so it can be stored in his backpack, a clear energon cube, Laserbeak in his tape form, and best of all, Soundwave's alt mode, a simple cassette player. Yes, it's supposed to be that small, and it'll fit well with your human figures. He's not loaded with specific or deep-cut extras like most figures in this line are, but there's plenty to work with.

Although he suffers from paint and articulation issues, Soundwave is a pretty enjoyable figure, and is one of my favorite releases in the line so far. It's a shame that this line has seemingly ended, because a lot more key characters, especially more Autobots, are needed. Hopefully Super7 picks it back up someday, provided they can improve on the various issues.
