Samurai Adventure Michelangelo and Space Adventure Donatello (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Samurai Adventure Michelangelo and Space Adventure Donatello
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Character variants are inevitable in cartoon figure lines, but how often do such lines incorporate variants not seen in the source material? NECA's TMNT line, which hasn't been variant-heavy thanks to the wide character selection, started giving specific characters all-new outfits. Usagi, a mere two-episode character, got both new space and samurai outfits, and such themes are present with one of their latest two-packs.

The samurai role is played here by Michelangelo, and he looks like a total badass. The combat-focused head, with gritted teeth, is an all-new sculpt, and it's got the traditional samurai kabuto helmet on him. This helmet pegs into the back, where a mask knot would usually go, allowing it to fit on his head with ease. You can swap his head out for an afraid expression, and no, it's not recycled from the regular Turtles; it's another new sculpt. These are two-piece heads, allowing them to be swapped around with each other and other Turtles (specifically the Punk Disguise and Pizza Club versions).

At about 5 3/4" tall without the helmet, Mikey wears a traditional samurai getup. It's red, blue, and yellow all over, and the paint is mostly good, but there's some uneven edges and bleed here and there. Still, the design of the outfit is very nice, and it bears repeating that this isn't from the show; it was made for this line. Jason Yang designed this new outfit, and Paul Harding and Tomasz Rozejowski brought it to life. The figures also benefit from a good blending of sculpt and articulation, allowing them to move nicely whilst preserving the look.

Also wearing an all-new getup is Donatello, wearing an astronaut outfit, befitting for the smart guy of the brothers. The head is another two-piece one, and while the mouth is reused, the top of the head is not, wearing a helmet with flip-up visor. The visor has some marking on it, unfortunately, but the rest of the figure is pretty clean. Speaking of paint, there's no cel-shading present here (save for Donnie's boots). The updated Bebop and Rocksteady that came out alongside these also lacked shading, which has me wondering if we'll be seeing less of that with these figures. Yang also designed this outfit, with Harding doing the sculpting, and the final product looks like something that really could've been in the cartoon.

I said already the articulation was great, even on Donnie's bulky spacesuit. Both have a barbell head and neck, and they move on the balls great, in addition to easy swapping. The arms on both have swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, along with swivel biceps, but the elbows are different; Mikey has double-hinged elbows, while Don has single-hinged elbows with forearm swivels (good thing he has biceps). The barbell waist rolls and tilts with ease, allowing for more dynamic poses, and the legs have ball-peg hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, and swivel/hinge ankles, with Mikey adding swivels for the upper knees and calves. Most of the joints move great, though the upper knee hinges on Mikey seemingly don't want to budge. Thankfully, the lower knee joints give you all the bend you'll need.

When it comes to accessories, Mikey fares better. In addition to the extra head, he comes with three pairs of hands - closed, gripping, and wide open, two katanas, a spear, a kusarigama (like his 2012 series counterpart), a tetsubo (studded club), and a chakram (that weird, round, pointy thing). The hands swap with ease, and they grip the weapons no problem. Donatello gets four pairs of hands - closed, gripping, gun grip, and wide open, a removable space helmet, a space-age backpack that plugs into the back, a jetpack that also plugs into his back, and a pair of "cosmic corn blasters." The blasters are the kind of goofy weapons you would've gotten with older Playmates figures, and they look great with the figure. My only nit is that Donnie doesn't have an extra head; a happier head would've been a great inclusion.

The fact that NECA was allowed to do all-new outfits for this line is pretty big, as it allows them to emulate that classic Playmates creatively that made the Turtles so great back then. This is a fun, near-perfect, pair of figures, and I hope they get to do more like this. I do recall them hiding a toon-styled Last Ronin in one of their Comic-Con displays…
