Suckerman (Suckerman) Review
Suckerman
Suckerman (Mattel)Spoiler alert: this thing sucks.
Now, this may be my long, long history with rubber monsters that are older than me, but there's a simple pleasure in holding a floppy Fierce Critter. While most companies were content with the 2-5" range, Mattel went big with a plate-sized suction cup lizardman. I've had the classic green here for years, but never gave it a proper review.
Firstly, despite being 44 years old, all 11 inches are still plenty soft, with only a hint of discoloration on the rear suckers and a small mouse nibble. Sporting 14 suckers on the front, 10 in back, and two on the feet, one's eyes are mostly drawn to the head, where we get a grinning nosferatu-lizard that radiates pulp-comic energy. Fishlike scales cover the torso and hips, fading into a cracked or veiny texture. The noodly arms terminate in simple nippers, while the feet have four equidistant "toes". The rear surface, however, is almost universally sculpted with smaller squarish scales, getting really tiny towards the wrists and ankles. The practical upshot of this is that, in full light, it gives the impression of translucent skin over scales. Or perhaps slime.
Now, the whole point of this thing is to stick it on things. It readily throws like a shuriken, but sticks better with a baseball pitch. It helps to wet it first, but this thing has some serious pull If I weren't worried about UV damage, it would 100% be in my truck window.
Of Mattel's late 70s oddballs, Suckerman was one of only a few with variants- or rather, they made black, red, and glow versions the following year. They were also reissued in the early 2000s, but somewhat smaller, and in a far stiffer material- more decoration than play. Frankly, they're all winners if you ask me, but I am a sucker for wiggly monsters, and this is my largest.
