Leonardo Leads (Pizza Club) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Usually, it's important for toy companies to keep major characters on the shelves, but NECA hasn't been able to do that much with their TMNT toon line, mainly due to its limited distribution. Still, they've done plenty of versions of the main four turtles, giving newcomers an opportunity of jump in. Both the Turtles in Disguise and Style Guide four-packs were great, and I consider the latter to be the ideal Turtle set, but we got new "Pizza Club" releases of the same molds a few months back, and I think both longtime collectors and those just getting into the line will like them. Keeping up with the VHS throwbacks seen with the packages, these are based off the tapes that were given out as part of Burger King's Kids Club. There were four of those, and there are four of these; makes sense. The boxes are color-coded to each turtle, and feature artwork by Aaron Hazouri. These are all based off the show's intro (except Raphael's, for some reason), and Hazouri's style is always nice to see. There are plenty of ties with these, but at least the accessories are behind plastic covers, keeping them in place in the boxes. As stated already, these are the same sculpts we've gotten before with previous four-packs, nothing new here. Each brother has a unique expression: Leonardo is just smiling, Donatello looks more stern, Raphael is ticked off and shouting, and Michelangelo is happy and cheerful. These are the two piece heads, of course, and the parts can be swapped around to create different expressions, but my main nit with these is that there's only one of these heads with almost all of them. The colors are different (more on that below), so the previous parts won't fit with these very well. At least they can work with the recent Punk and Samurai/Space sets. To help set these apart from the Disguise Turtles, the colors are different here. The skin is darker, the plastrons are yellow, and as a whole, these are bolder than before. While fans may be divided on which looks better, I enjoy these colors more than previous toon turtles, and the clean paint helps, though the belt initials could look nicer. As before, these stand 5 1/2" tall and are plenty articulated, with barbell head, neck, and waist, swivel/hinge mask knots, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, ball-jointed hips, and double-hinged knees. Aside from some slightly tight joints, I had no major movement issues, with the exception of Leo, whose heads don't want to swap easily. The neck comes out with the head, and the two halves seem to have some deformation that make them hard to pop apart. The others were fine, so I guess I just got a bum Leo. What's also new here are the accessories, all extras that call back to specific episodes (I won't remember most of them, though). Each turtle has an extra set of hands, signature weapons, and color-coded VHS tapes, but the rest is all new. Leonardo is one of the few with an extra head, depicting his robotic Combatland doppelgänger, and this is another two-piece head. He also has a little warrior statue, some funky binoculars, a Three Musketeers book (one of my favorites episodes, BTW), a pepperoni and marshmallow pizza, and a little pack-in of Zipp the alien. Zipp's a cute little sculpt, with a little stand to make him float, and also has a ball-peg head. Donatello has his staff, of course, but he now gets a spinning staff piece, with an extra right hand designed for it. It can take some force to get the fingers through the holes, but he looks amazing with it, and the paint on the accessory is nice as well. He also features a pickle and avocado pizza (yuck!), his college degree, an opened-up Roadkill Rodney head (which can be used with the previously released Rodneys), and Jocko, the monkey from "Turtles of the Jungle." He's an unfortunately solid piece with no articulation, but the sculpt and paint help make him look adorable. Raphael is the only other figure with an alternate head, and this one is covered in pizza dough. It's a funny look that swaps onto the pegs easily, and can be used with any Turtle, not just these ones. His sai are notably resculpted, with a curvier, toonier look, but he can hold them between his fingers just fine. His only other extras are Polly the parrot, a TV guide book, and a sausage and jelly bean pizza. Compared to the others, he's pretty light, and reusing the pizza slice that fits onto his sai would've helped with the value a little bit. Michelangelo also has new weapon sculpts, with his nunchucks having larger hooks, so they're less likely to break (you can't use the spinning effect from past Mikeys with it, sadly). He has a granola and licorice pizza, but who's making all these pizzas? Mikey, of course, and he has the chef hat and cloth apron to prove it. They fit on the figure well, and create a more unique look. Rounding things out are his pet goldfish Max, a puppet (which fits over the wristbands in place of the hands), and a miniature Gorgonzola, the movie monster from "Bebop and Rocksteady Conquer the Universe." Although I feel those who are new to the line will enjoy these, those who already have a set of Turtles will just get these for new accessories. Still, it's a cool, unique line-up, and I enjoy the new deco, but a few more accessories really could've helped the slightly above-average value. I'm surprised these are selling out so quickly (both because of Turtle fans and scalpers), but for those who miss out, I'm sure this won't be your last chance for the brothers. - 6/3/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
