Sgt. Hacker vs. Scalpel G.I. Joe vs. Cobra (Hasbro)Sometimes the also-rans are also worth it. What we have here is a pair of characters that were present in the current comics, but pretty much disappeared shortly afterward. The Spy Troops line was plagued with odd proportions, ugly action features, and some fairly hilarious disguises. But even those have their uses. Opening with Sgt Hacker, ostensibly the meat of the set. He's the tech guy, that's about all there is to him. He's got a wee little torso, but everything else is in proportion. It pretty much goes away if you put him behind the wheel of something, or just have him crouching over an access panel. I always appreciate some nice plain colors in this line, and while we get a fair amount of highlights in blue-gray and two blues, he's still very plain and utilitarian. Apart from the knife on his chest, everything looks like tools and tech rather than weaponry. Accessory-wise, there's a nice rifle, a decent SMG saddled with a Sound Attack tab, a grappling hook, and a fairly ridiculous Firefly get-up consisting of boot covers, a vest, and a ski mask with mounted goggles. While it looks ridiculous on one figure, the various components can be parted out to your Cobra legions. Designate some specialists. Scalpel fills a gap in the Cobra hierarchy, that being the designated eccentric director of the medical department. Even Venom and Mindbender didn't spend much time patching up soldiers, but here's the Medi-vipers' very own evil Doug Ross. There's a few fun quirks here: the oddly angled hands actually look great cradling a long arm, there's a rack of medical instruments strapped to his chest, and the tiny torso is less apparent here, thanks to the skirt piece, presumably representing his scrubs. It only restricts the legs slightly, but this guy isn't exactly a dynamic fighter. Or maybe he is; his accessories include two meat hooks or something, which are of course a terrifying thing to see a surgeon carrying toward you. The handles plug into (very limited) balljoints on the rear of his Liefeldian shoulder pads, instead of using clips like a sane person. There's also another rifle, and a little flip-out saw on the right wrist. The surgical hood sports a flip-up face shield. This isn't a bad buy if you're into the old scale. Good diorama fillers, extra armor bits, weapons in interesting colors. None of it is spectacular, but it's solid enough. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
