Living Room Diorama (Simpsons (Jakks Pacific)) Review
Living Room Diorama
Simpsons (Jakks Pacific) (Jakks Pacific)At the start of the 21st century, Playmates put out their best line that wasn't Ninja Turtles: Simpsons. The main gimmick of said line was that the figures could be plugged into playsets to spout lines from the show, and said feature was hit or miss at times, especially in its later years. Despite that, both the figures and sets looked fantastic, and now we have somewhat of a successor in Jakks Pacific. They're putting out figures in the same scale as Playmates, but with no talking feature. We have gotten a playset, however, but scaled to go with the smaller figures. Unsurprisingly, it's the Simpson residence.

I've already discussed the packaging with the 2.5" figures, and the box for the set is more of the same, but windowless. You still get some good photos of the set, showing off all the features and whatnot. Inside the box, much of the pieces are kept inside plastic bags, ensuring they'll be safe, and easy to put back whenever you want to.

The set is disassembled inside the box, but it's only three pieces - the floor, front, and side wall - and they connect with ease. Once completed, the set scales about 10" long, 6 3/4" tall, and 6 3/8" wide, big enough for the figures, but not too big for the shelf. The exterior is a good representation of the house as a whole, with sculpted depth for things like the door, chimney, and bushes, and stickers for the first two of those, as well as the windows. There is some paint, like for the roof, bushes, and steps, and it's all pretty clean… except for some slop on part of the roof. That's the downside of windowless boxes: you can't check for any defects.

The interior depicts the living room of the house, because there's no visual in the series more iconic than the family sitting on the couch. The walls make use of large stickers, showing the doorways to the kitchen and dining room, alongside other aspects such as the crooked painting. The edges of the rug on the floor is painted, and very cleanly at that, but the inside is a sticker. I think the reason for this is because of one of the set's features: there's two bases on the rug for figures to stand out, and turning the wheel on the base lets them pace around it. To help you make better use of the feature, they included a Homer figure, the same one both released individually and in the family multipack. The figures fit on the bases easily, so plug one or two in and watch them go around in circles.

Then there's the couch itself, in what I assume is one of the main selling points of the set. The couch spans 4 7/8" long from end to end, being big enough for the whole family to sit on, and the design of the couch is pretty plain, though the left cushion is a little squished, probably as a result of Homer sitting on it so much. The couch offers two different actions features: press the button on the left side, and the cushion flips up to the side; press the button on the right, and the bottom caves in, bringing the cushions down and making everyone on it slide off. The flip-up seat feels like it was borrowed from the couch Mattel did in the 90s, but here, it's pretty lackluster, and the secondary feature works much better.

The couch isn't the only piece of furniture, as the TV is also included. The TV feels a bit oversized, but the design is pretty good, albeit dated due to it being the older model set. The paint is clean as well, and has a lenticular screen depicting everyone's favorite uber-violent cartoon, Itchy and Scratchy. The little stand with phone and desk lamp is packed in, and there's a spot on the base designed for it, along with the larger lamp that goes on the other side of the couch. The lamp stands up fine, but has a tendency to fall over, though the couch can give it some extra support. Throw in the aforementioned Homer, and you'll have a pretty good set-up.

Aside from a few nits, this is a very well-made set overall, offering plenty of accessories and features, and works great with the 2.5" figures. It certainly helps there's plenty of them out right now, with both the family set and individual figures giving us nine different characters out right now. I'm hoping Jakks does more sets like this; I've heard a Krusty Burger set is coming, but Moe's Tavern or the Nuclear Power Plant would be great, especially if they come with more unique characters and features.
