Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) (Neca)NECA run's with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license has given us plenty of firsts when it comes to characters, doing a variety of allies and villains that haven't gotten figures before. They've done the first official Jagwar figure, the first Dreadmon figure, and now, the first Bellybomb figure. If you aren't familiar with him, he was a character made solely for the Archie TMNT Adventures comics (though the 2012 cartoon had a character clearly based off him), being present in three issues aiding Krang in his evil plans, and was introduced in the same issue as Slash. After all these years, this alien menace finally has some merch. I usually talk about the head first when it comes to figures, but in Bellybomb's case, he's almost all head. His name comes from the fact that his mouth is on his stomach, and it's a big mouth with sharp fangs. The upper jaw is hinged, allowing his mouth to open up, and the joint blends in well with the sculpt. His singular eye makes up what would be his head, with hard, pointy horns on the sides. The eyestalk and body have very wrinkly sculpts, as opposed to a smooth body, and the paint is mostly clean, aside from a mark on one of the teeth. At about 6 5/8" tall, Bellybomb's sculpt was provided by Brodie Perkins, in his first work for the Adventures line, and just because he's an alien criminal doesn't mean he's gonna run around naked. He wears a jacket around his torso, opened up to expose his mouth, and the color of it is a very bold blue. His boots are the same color, and he also has dark neon pink pants with a belt. His wristcuffs are leftover from restraints Slash cut free, and this brings us to another unique bit of alien anatomy; his hands have small eyes on them (think the Pale Man), likely providing the depth perception his cyclops eye cannot. The paint all over the figure is clean and consistent, though the outlines on the cuffs and hands could look a little neater. Bellybomb doesn't move too much differently from the others, aside from some unique points of articulation. He has barbell joints for the top and bottom of the eye stalk, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, double-hinged knees, and swivel waist and thighs. In addition to all that, he has not only a hinged jaw, but a ball-jointed tongue and a moving eye. The eye doesn't have much friction, meaning it can be spun around inside the socket, but that combined with the eye stalk joints allows him to look all around him. There's some tightness to the joints, mainly in the arms, but everything works well enough to give him plenty of poses. Compared to everyone before him, Bellybomb is a bit lighter on extras, but's there still plenty of appropriate accessories. He has seven hands to make use of - 2x closed, 2x gripping, 2x clawing, and a gun gripping right with a vertical hinge, allowing for better weapon poses. Said hand is designed for the included laser rifle, which looks very nice, and can be held with little issue. Bellybomb also gets a pack-in in Krang, with makes sense as he was his partner in crime. The little alien is sculpted by Tomasz Rozejowski, who's good at more cartoonier designs like him, matching Chris Allen's style perfectly. The paint is very clean as well, and in addition to ball-jointed tentacles, Krang also has a bit of curve on the bottom, allowing him to sit on someone's head, specifically Bellybomb's. While the TMNT toon line's been my favorite from NECA, the Adventures line may be a close second. Bellybomb looks great, with some unique engineering given the design, and he and Krang will go great with the earlier-released Slash. He's first to market at Target right now, alongside some other releases, but he's the only one I've been able to find so far.
