Sheila the Thief (Invisible) (Dungeons & Dragons (Super7)) Review
Sheila the Thief (Invisible)
Dungeons & Dragons (Super7) (Super7)Despite being around for less than ten years by that point, 1983 saw Dungeons & Dragons getting its own animated series. I've seen a few episodes of it, and it's surprisingly good for a cartoon at the time. About decades after the show ended, Hasbro gave it a short-lived line of figures, and Super7 picked up the mantle earlier this year with the announcement of Ultimates. The first wave should be out in the Fall, but in the meantime, they gave us an exclusive released around SDCC, depicting Sheila making use of her cloak of invisibility.

For those unaware, Super7 has began cutting back on the use of slipcovers, making for a better packaging display on the shelf. Sheila's box depicts the window as a dragon's open maw amongst a rocky background, looking rather fierce, and the back gives us both shots from the show and character stats, like a game of D&D would give you. The box design fits the license well, and I imagine it'll be uniform across the line.

I don't think there'll be too much to talk about with this figure, since she's cast in clear plastic, and hence, has no color. Well, almost no color; her eyebrows, pupils, and lips are painted white, helping make the details in the face obvious. Even with the lack of skin and hair colors, the sculpt matches the cartoon very well, and it's comparable to the Hasbro version. As with most Ultimates, Sheila has three portraits: one neutral, one smirking, and one surprised. The heads are made out of a slightly softer plastic, making swapping them an ease. Hopefully the regular version, amongst other figures, does the same.

At 6 1/2" tall, I feel Sheila is a little oversized, even in this scale. She's only a young teenager, but chances are she hit an early growth spurt. Her outfit can be made out easily even when transparent, sporting a shirt will rolled-up sleeves and a skirt, a belt, and boots going all the way up to her thighs. The skirt is made of a softer plastic, and has slits on the sides to allow the legs to go out without interference. The only bit of paint on it are her buttons, meant to go on her cloak. Speaking of, the cloak is white, with some transparency through it. Unlike Hasbro's Sheila, the cloak is tailored cloth, and it's both properly sized and has a hood that can be pulled up over the head. It would've been great if the cloak was wired, allowing it to be posed in dynamic ways, but I can live.

For Super7 standards, Sheila has some of the best articulation I've seen out of the Ultimates world. She has a ball/hinge head, similar to some of their other figures like Power Rangers, but it looks like they've improved the joint to give it more clearance in the socket. This allows for plenty of tilt on the ball, and as I've said before, the heads swap easily. There are swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, alongside swivels at the sleeve cuffs to help make arm poses more natural-looking. The waist is another ball-peg, with more range than expected from an Ultimate, and below it are swivel/hinge hips, knees, and ankles, alongside swivel thighs. The knees are a little tight, so make sure to work them carefully. Other than that, everything works great. Sheila's rather light on accessories, getting only three heads and three sets of hands: gripping, closed, and loosely gesturing (referred to as "spooked" hands). An extra cloak made out of clear plastic to fit the rest of the figure's aesthetic would've been a nice extra, but it looks as if S7 didn't want to spend extra money on unique tooling.

Sheila is not only a good start to the D&D Cartoon line, she's also one of the best Ultimates I've gotten. Ignoring the obvious gimmick that comes with being an exclusive, the sculpt is great, and she moves surprisingly good for a Super7 figure. I'm looking forward to the release of the first wave, and hopefully the second one goes up for pre-order soon. The sooner we can complete the main team, the better.
