Powerpinch (Transformers - Beast Wars) Review
Powerpinch
Transformers - Beast Wars (Hasbro)This is what it looks like to be a winner and a loser at the same time.
An early toy-only minion, this guy's only real personality trait is "cartoonishly evil". And as far as the beast mode goes, this is pretty good. It's a fairly good, if squarish, representation of an earwig, with defined segments, accurate mouthparts, and only slightly exaggerated cerci.
The majority of the toy is cast in translucent green plastic, but it's so dark as to appear almost black in indirect light. The legs, face, and pincers are a nice Halloweeny orange. All in all, slightly evocative of a decaying leaf pile.
Articulation is limited to a pair of hinges in the tail, enough to curl the pincer forward, and the pinchy pinchy action (lever-driven).
Transformation is somewhat like a typical car, oddly- fold out the limbs from the underside, remove the tail, and fold the body in half, basically. The clear plastic, sadly, is the easily bent kind, leading to nasty white stress marks with little pressure.
'bot mode is the usual bug aesthetic: barrel chested, bug legs sticking out of the biceps, slightly bulbous limbs with obvious ball joints at the shoulders, hips, elbows and knees. The head swivels, and he has hinged ankles. With a little fiddling, he can hit some pretty dynamic poses.
The hands, sadly, are among the worst this side of Airhammer. Just half the mouthparts hanging vertically off the wrists. At least the hinge looks a bit like a fist, so if you swing the orange bit out of the way, it kinda looks like a flare on the wrist armor. You'll only have to look at one, though, because the pincer makes for an intimidating hand weapon. My only gripe is that green plastic again. The chest fares the worst with stress marks, but the elbows look pretty sad as well. The joints are still plenty stiff, at least.
For a Basic figure, this devious detrivore is pretty average- a few annoying flaws, but at least it's not a shellformer. Plus, how often do you see earwig toys? This thing is spooky enough to double as a Halloween decoration besides. I give him an extra point.
