Mondo Gecko (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca)) Review
Mondo Gecko
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Neca) (Neca)As spaced out as NECA's TMNT Adventures releases have been, they've been making up for it by putting out much as possible within short bursts. Case in point, we've recently gotten a four-pack and four new singles, one of which is Mondo Gecko, because the more Mutanimals, the better.

Mondo's Adventures design seems to be a combination of his original toy and toon designs, with its own unique attributes, such as yellow eyes instead of red, and long, shaggy hair that would make his counterparts jealous. He has a calm, "hey duuuuude" expression, showing off his braces, lifted from his toy design, and the lined brows and lips seem to be toy-inspired as well. Tomasz Rozejowski provided the sculpt for our lizard friend, which is based off Ken Mitchroney's style, like usual for the line. His skin is a light, almost neon shade of green, and the paint and lines are mostly clean, but there's some bleed from the teeth onto the lips.

At 5 3/4" tall, Mondo's outfit isn't all that different from his counterparts, with cut-off shirt and shorts, red and gray sneakers, and asymmetrical knee pads. The gloves are unique, as while most Mondos have a red glove solely on his right hand, the glove is now on his left, whereas the right has a black glove. His skin is as scaly as a real gecko, retaining the drawn-on scales like in the comics. The clothes offer bold colors and details, with the shirt having a skull and crossbones like his toy design, purple elbow pads like his toon design, and purple shorts like both of them. Aside from the aforementioned teeth bleed, the paint is very clean on the body, and wrists have their joints not only painted, but cast in the same colors as the gloves, which is pretty smart thinking; the toon Mondo had his gloved wrist joint painted red over a green joint, and that chipped off to reveal the miscolored hinge underneath.

Mondo moves darn well, and Jay Kushwara is credited for blending in the joints with the sculpt. Our rockin' mutant has a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, ankles, and tail, ball-jointed hips, double-hinged elbows and knees, and swivel biceps and thighs. Granted, he doesn't have an articulated jaw, a joint at the base of the neck, or even a waist joint like his toon counterpart does, but all of the joints work well enough for plenty of poses. The shoulders and biceps are a little tight, however, and while they get moving easily, it's just something to make note of when you start playing around with him.

The accessory count may not be quite as big as the toon Mondo (granted, he came with a whole another character), but they fit his Archie counterpart well. Plenty of hand options are included here, with not only relaxed and gripping pairs like the prior NECA Mondo, but also a wide grip right, a shaka sign left, and a devil's horns right. The hands swap with no issue, and the grips work great for other extras. His skateboard is a more simplistic design than the other Mondos, and it's not jet-powered either, but the colors are great, with a manta ray graphic in the bottom, and the rolling wheels and foot peg help, even though keeping him up on it is a little trickier than expected. Since this version of Mondo was mutated from a young rocker, he also comes with a teal guitar and a microphone, allowing him to rock and roll (he'll probably fit great with the Super7 Rock n' Roll Turtles). Rounding things out art his pet gecko, which combined with exposure to mutagen created Mondo's reptilian form, and a simple soda cup, which the wider grip is designed for.

This is the second Mondo Gecko NECA's done, and while the prior toon version has his strengths over him, I actually like this version more because of the design, and the included accessories are pretty fun and fitting for the character. We're getting closer to completing the Mutanimals, and if NECA can put out Wingnut and Screwloose sometime next year, as well as a properly-dressed Leatherhead, many an Adventures fan will have their life (or at least their display) complete.
